The Studio

This unique dwelling is a rustic stone cottage originally built in 1905 as an artist’s studio for four sisters, one of whom was Blanche Ames Ames, the noted inventor, suffragist, political cartoonist, and botanical illustrator. (She also designed the Ames Mansion at Borderland, where the splendid interior scenes of the mystery film “Knives Out” were filmed.)

The Studio was expanded in the 1950s with a kitchen, bathroom, and three small bedrooms. The main living/dining area, centered around the fireplace, is illuminated by a north-facing skylight.

The cottage sits at the edge of a lovely cove with an expansive view of Ipswich Bay. At high tide, the house is literally steps from the water; when the tide goes down, it reveals a broad silver mica-sand beach. (The estate’s white-sand beach is a two-minute walk away.) The stone terrace and cozy master bedroom both offer gorgeous views of the beach and water (with water views from the kitchen and living room as well); one feels very close to nature here.

Three bedrooms (sleeps 5—one queen bed, one room with one twin bed, one room with two twins). One bathroom (stall shower); enclosed outdoor area for drying bathing suits and towels. Kitchen (compact but charming) has small breakfast table and washer/dryer. WiFi and other utilities are included. There is a small A/C window unit in the living room, and space heaters are provided in the spring and fall. The house is available April through October.
